Backlinks and SEO: most people know the basic idea, which is simple enough - the more links you have pointing to your site, the better the search engines like your site.

But that very simple idea spawns a host of unanswered questions. For a long time, I've felt a bit uneasy about this topic and thought I should get to grips with it sooner rather than later.

The sort of questions I had were:

What is the difference between a good and a bad backlink?
What are all the ways of getting backlinks?
Is it a good idea to BUY backlinks?
How does backlinking fit in to other traffic strategies, such as article marketing and directory submission?
etc.

Well - I found an excellent resource for the price of a family pizza that answers these questions, and does a whole lot more. (Reason #1) It's called

Atomic Backlinking!

I read through the 87 pages last week and I now feel I KNOW about backlinks!

But that's not all! (Reason #2)

In fact, the book is more of a mini-course on traffic generation, covering a whole range of traffic-generation topics, but all of them centred around backlinks.

The chapter on getting links to .gov and .edu sites (and why you should) is worth the price in itself. Some great ideas there.

In fact, there is a short section about one Google search technique that is revealed that is worth the whole price on its own! VERY helpful!

But that's not all! (Reason #3)

Earlier, I had been looking at a product about keyword research and wondering whether to investigate it futher, and maybe purchase it. But I abandoned that idea when I saw that a bonus with Atomic Backlinking is a 12-video course on keyword research.

I watched that course all the way through, and really, on its own its worth a couple of family pizzas: and since it comes with a full PDF transcript - throw in another pizza!

I'm grateful to Steve Johnson for introducing this to me. If you're interested in getting free backlinks, I think you'll find it interesting. http://qassia.com The site is still in "Private Beta", as they call it, but has already hit 12,000+ members. It defies direct categorization.. Is it article marketing? It is blogging? A bit of both, I think. There are many imaginative and creative features that are worth looking at, including:

Its viral-incentivised approach to getting new members
The fact that YOU get the Adsense revenue from displays of your posts
Its member-based quality assurance
The simple rules that help minimise abuse of the rating system
Strong competitive element for getting more exposure

The purpose of anyone being active there is pretty blantantly to get backlinks. Provided Google doesn't impose a penalty on the site, this has very good potential. I think (but am not sure), that there is an advantage to getting in early and clocking up your Q$ account before too many people get too wealthy. The $100 - $500 per referall? That's what you get for referring others to sign up. It's not real $s. It's Q$s. And the only reason to get Q$ is to get better ranking. Overall, I like the site and the ideas behind it.
